When I first moved to the Raleigh area, someone suggested that we have lunch at a restaurant in “Few Quay” or was is “Phew-Kay”? With a correct pronunciation of /ˈfjuːkweɪ vəˈriːnə/, (thanks, Wikipedia). Fuquay-Varina or Fuquay for short, located just 15 minutes south of Raleigh, has flourished into a vibrant, family-friendly community. Its population has doubled in the past 10 years to over 25,000 citizens making it one of the fastest growing towns in North Carolina! Downtown Fuquay-Varina   Originally, visitors from near and far traveled to the quaint town that is today called Fuquay-Varina seeking the healing powers of the Fuquay Mineral Spring. With 2 beautiful downtown districts, an abundance of charm, a rich history and plenty to see and do, Fuquay-Varina offers a dash more to those seeking an adventure. AAward-winning breweries, a thriving art scene, authentic festivals, entertaining outdoor concerts, exceptional shopping and dining that is more fun than formal – you’ll find it in Fuquay-Varina! The Story of Fuquay-Varina Fuquay-Varina, first known as “Piney Woods,” acquired her unusual names from the fates of history. Among the early land grant Downtown Fuquay-Varina families were the Burts, Joneses, and Rowlands, but it was a French veteran of the Revolutionary War named William Fuquay who moved his family to the exact site, purchasing 1000 acres of Jones Land in 1805.   While plowing a field, circa 1858, William’s son Stephen or grandson David Crockett uncovered a mineral spring. “Taking the waters” became an attraction for people with all types of physical ailments, leading to the annual celebrations at the spring on Easter Monday and the Fourth of July. Conveniently, the early timber rail provided a ready means of transportation while hotels, catering to long-term visitors, surrounded the spring. Varina During the “War for Southern Independence,” a young soldier named Ballentine, born just south of the spring, received morale-boosting letters signed with the pen name “Varina.” He later looked up the Fayetteville lady, married her and brought her to live at his homeplace. Continuing to call her Varina, he named his post office and Balloon Festival Memorial Day Weekend mercantile establishment across from the mineral spring for her. When two timber rail lines crossed nearby, “Varina Station” was born.   In the early 1900’s tobacco farmers, fleeing the Granville wilt devastating their crops, began migrating into Southern Wake County. Their “golden weed” fostered a large commercial tobacco market. Railroads flourished and traffic flowed along Main Street in Fuquay Springs and around the Broad Street station, now known simply as Varina. Fuquay-Varina Splash Pad Fuquay Springs, incorporated in 1909, joined the neighboring community of Varina in 1963 as 1 municipality. Since that time, Fuquay-Varina has become one of the fastest growing small towns in North Carolina. The town with the hyphenated name and 2 historic districts has been able to successfully retain its small-town charm while successfully adding modern amenities and rewarding business opportunities that have attracted residents from all over the United States. Cary Town Hall Cary is located in Western Wake County, only 15 minutes from downtown Raleigh and one that is frequently ranked on many “Best Of” lists.  My first contact with Cary was in 2004.  My wife and I decided to move to the Raleigh area and we had decided that Cary would be the place that we would move our family.  When I told a friend that had some knowledge of the Raleigh area that we were moving to Cary, he looked at me with a smirk and said, “so you’re moving to the Containment Area.” Cary has a reputation for drawing Yankees and people from other areas to its town limits.  The running joke is that Cary actually stands for “Containment Areas for Relocated Yankees.”  What attracts people from other areas is that Cary Downtown Cary offers a quality of life sought by many. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that Cary consistently is mentioned among the nation’s top cities, being recognized as one of the Safest Places to Live in America, Best Places to Retire and Best Places to Raise a Family in the United States.   Even though Cary has grown from a small town into one of the larger communities in North Carolina, Cary offers a small-town atmosphere and a proximity to Raleigh, the Research Triangle Park, and the RDU International Airport.  Cary provides a variety of enjoyable and economical recreational, sports, environmental, historical and cultural arts programs and services. Indulge yourself in the enticing, natural beauty waiting on one of the 39 greenway trails open sunrise to sunset and providing more than 70 miles of recreational amenities for walking, jogging and bicycling in a natural setting. Q 3 Real Estate Market – Cary, Apex, Morrisville For those that follow the local real estate market, it is very apparent that the market slowed during the middle to end of September and into early October. It is unsure whether this slowdown is a temporary slowdown or a predictor of lower than anticipated fourth quarter pending and closed sales.   Historically, home sales tend to slow in late Q3 and Q4; however, over the last two to three years home sales remained robust. Home buyers continued to be very active, even during the holiday season, driving the homes sales numbers higher. This year could be different. In fact, homes sales started to show signs of slipping back during the summer and are reflected in some of the recent sales data. Doom & Gloom Ahead?? While no one is forecasting the “doom and gloom” real estate market of 2008 – 2010, it appears that the market is, at the least, taking some time to catch its breath and may be returning to a more normal state. Downtown Apex “I wasn’t born here, but I got here as quick as I could!” is a common expression heard from non-native Apexians. There’s something for everyone in this southern suburb of Raleigh, North Carolina. Apex combines a relaxing small-town atmosphere with convenience to big-city amenities. There is also exciting new growth in both residential and commercial areas. The town planners are working to ensure that the small-town character remains as our population grows and new residents join our wonderful community! Stroll along Salem Street and explore the unique stores and restaurants. Run, walk, or bike along the miles of greenways. Play soccer, disc golf, tennis or volleyball at one of the numerous parks around town. Enjoy a movie, art exhibit or presentation by a local author at the Halle.  Plus there’s a festival almost every month! Quality of Life The town of Apex has received many impressive accolades over the years including the following: Number 1 Best Place to Live in the US, Time/Money Magazine (August 2015) Go to Article Number 1 Best City in North Carolina, Movoto (November 2013) Number 5 Happiest Suburb in America, Movoto (May 2014) Number 5 Best NC Towns for Young Families, NerdWallet (July 2013) Top 10 Best Towns for Families, Family Circle (July 2014) History A lot has changed since it’s humble beginnings as the unincorporated town of Log Pond. The initial small community developed around the railroad station.  The forests were then cleared for farmlands and Apex became an active trading and shopping center. The town began to grow due to the success of the lumber industry and the discovery that the land around Apex was perfect for tobacco crops. There were two disastrous fires in 1905 and 1912 which destroyed most of the downtown business district. However, these fires are responsible for the look of Salem Street today. The downtown and surrounding neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the best examples of an intact turn-of-the-century railroad town in North Carolina. The Research Triangle Park was established nearby in the 1960s and is responsible for the population growth still seen today. RTP continues to attract technology-driven firms and Triangle area is now considered one of the top five high technology regions worldwide. Thankfully throughout all of these changes, the core of Apex has remained the same. Apex is a town focused on community-preserving it’s past while ensuring a successful future.
